He declared quitting showbiz whatever the outcome of the election but it seems popular TV host-actor Edu Manzano changed his mind when he signed an exclusive contract with GMA-7 on Aug. 11.
The 55-year old actor told “24 Oras” in an interview that after the election (when he lost as vice-president), he got himself busy working for a private company.
However, the GMA offer, apparently, was hard to refuse.
“I thank GMA-7 because they are also providing me an avenue kung saan I will be able to continue rendering public service sa pamamagitan ng mga programang ibibigay nila,” Edu related.
His being a Kapuso is a comeback of sorts for Edu, who first exposed his hosting chops via “Emergency” in 1995.
In a previous interview with ABS-CBN, Edu said that he is not keen on hosting game shows again (he used to host “Pilpinas, Game K N B?” and “1 versus 100”). However, his initial project in the Kapuso network is, coincidentally, a game show, titled “Asar Talo Pero Laging Panalo.”
Wilma Galvante, GMA’s senior vice-president for entertainment, said in a separate interview on “24 Oras” that the show will premiere on September.
“We are really, really, profusely working on it, improving it, further as we go along,” she said.
Edu is grateful that he and the production team are able to participate in brainstorming for the new show.
“Pinag-isipang mabuti. Masayang programa,” he said of “Asar Talo.”
“Pero hinding-hindi ako sasayaw dito,” he said after a pause, seemingly pertaining to his stint on “Game K N B” where he popularized the dance craze, “Papaya.”

Kris Aquino files petition to nullify marriage to James Yap
Determined to legally end her union with husband James Yap, Kris Aquino has filed a “petition for the declaration of nullity of marriage” last Aug. 9 at the Makati Family Court.
As mentioned by her lawyers Anna Liza Logan and Anne Sharlyne Lapuz in earlier interviews, Kris wanted to have the marriage declared null and void to begin with.
While Kris’ camp refused to divulge the grounds and technicalities ingrained in the petition, an entertainment website revealed that the “main ground” was "lack of authority of the solemnizing officer."
Previous reports indicated that the civil marriage of the two on July 10, 2005 was officiated by Congressman Sonny Belmonte, who was the mayor of Quezon City. Although the TV host-actress was advised by her lawyers not to speak on the details of the matter, an article on the matter said that it was not Cong. Belmonte who bound her and James in matrimony but a Rayda P. Tumaliuan, who is said to be a minister at the Holy Sacrament International Church.
Although Kris would not comment about her latest move, she took to her recently resurrected Twitter account to air her feelings about break-ups.
“No matter how brave u try to be, a breakup is painful. Quoting again from my love iphone app- when u break up, your whole identity is shattered. It's like death. True, it's hard to get to know myself all over again as just me & no longer part of a couple,” she tweeted on Aug. 11.
This was followed by her second and last tweet that night: “Pasensya na ha, nasa senti mode. Just read this quote "if u love some1u'd be willing to give up everything for them, but if they loved u back, they'd never ask u to." Good night.”
The petition was intended to be served to James after being awarded as the Most Valuable Player of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) last Wednesday, late evening newscast “Bandila” reported. Several court officials from the Makati RTC were said to have waited for the cager outside the Araneta Coliseum, where the event was held.
However, they were not able to serve the petition as James immediately left the venue after the ceremony.
When sought for comment via a phone interview, James is said to have been shocked because he was not aware that the court officials were waiting for him.
On the lighter side, James---who plays forward for the B-Meg Derby Aces---not only won his second MVP (his first was back in 2005), but was also recognized as part of the “Mythical Five.” In his acceptance speech, he dedicated his award to his son with Kris, Baby James.
“Para sa’yo ‘to, I love you and miss na miss na kita,” he directed to Bimby.

Zanjoe is happy for Mariel and Robin
Zanjoe Marudo seems way past that phase when he never planned on breaking up with ex-girlfriend Mariel Rodriguez, much less see either of them in another person’s arms.
Speaking up on the blooming romance of Mariel with action star Robin Padilla for the first time, Zanjoe said he could only be happy for his former flame.
“Siyempre wala naman akong ibang dapat maramdaman. Dapat akong matuwa na may nag-aalaga na sa kanya, may nagmamahal sa kanya, meron nang nagpapasaya. Masasaktan siguro ako kung napasama siya. Eh ang nangyari naman kay Mariel eh, napabuti naman siya,” he told “The Buzz” in an interview aired on Aug. 8.
The ex-couple called it quits last summer, and since then, Zanjoe, in an interview on "TV Patrol," said that they have not talked. The two were even seen seemingly cold to each other during the press conference for the film “Cinco,” where they both star in separate episodes.
Zanjoe added that he has no ill feelings for Robin, who was once rumored to be the third party of their break-up and who recently made a public declaration of his love for Mariel.
“The Buzz” host Toni Gonzaga tried to extract from Zanjoe the real reason for the split. However, he only gave her smiles, sometimes chuckles, when she enumerated a list of possible cause (“family, time, falling out of love, focus sa career?”).
“Siguro ‘yung dahilan, akin na lang [‘yon]. Tiyaka matagal na eh. Dapat… ‘wag na nating pag-usapan. May mga kanya-kanya na kaming buhay. Dapat ‘wag na nating ibalik baka maapektuhan pa ‘yong present,” he said.
Mariel earlier admitted in an interview that they parted ways so that Zanjoe can focus on his career and continue to fend for his family. But then, she also intimated that the break-up “wasn’t exactly my decision.” As reported previously by Bulletin Entertainment, a source alleged that Zanjoe’s manager, Keren Pascual, was “very much against” the couple’s relationship.
While Mariel is seemingly nearing on taking another shot at romance, Zanjoe is simply laid-back about finding a new love.
“Hindi ko naman sinasabi na ngayon na gusto kong magkarelasyon. Kung merong dumating, hindi ko rin naman pipigilan ang sarili ko na iwasan ‘yung ganung bagay,” he said.
And yet, rumors about him making his move on his “Kristine” co-star Cristine Reyes spawned this intriguing statement from the latter: “Si Zanjoe ay malabong tao.”
“Hindi ko nga alam eh. Malabo ba ko?” he said jokingly when Toni sought for his reaction. Still jokingly, he clarified that he is not courting his new leading lady. “Malabo pa. Siguro baka puwede niya kong samahan sa Cebu, papaayos ko ‘yung mata ko, baka maging malinaw na,” Zanjoe said, referring to Cristine’s Cebu trip with another man being linked to her, Rayver Cruz.
Cristine elaborated on that statement during her interview on “Showbiz News Ngayon” last week. She related that according to their common friends, Zanjoe is vocal to them when it comes to wanting to ask her out, but when she's around, “Cool [lang] siya... Kunyari walang pakialam," the actress said.
For his part, Zanjoe revealed that he is not often conscious about courting a girl he likes.
“‘Yung panliligaw kasi, hindi ko normal na gawain. ‘Pag nagkakagusto ako sa tao, parang hindi ‘yun ‘yung style ko eh, hindi ‘yun ‘yung kinalakihan ko. ‘Pag nakilala ko ‘yung tao, magiging kaibigan ko. Tapos kung magkagusto ako, kung ma-develop ako, dun na nagsisimula siguro and hindi ko namamalayan na nanliligaw na pala ako,” he related.
Happy Mariel
Meanwhile, Mariel’s smile looked as bright as her long yellow gown when she was interviewed by “The Buzz” after her one-on-one interview with Robin on “E-Live” on August 7 where he unhesitatingly declared to the whole world “Mariel, mahal kita.”
“I’m happy. There’s no need to rush, ‘yun ang payo sa’kin ng lahat ng tao talaga. Kala kasi nila nagfa-fast forward ako eh. Tapos sabi rin ni Robin, i-enjoy lang ‘yung sweetness ng present. Dahil ‘yon ang magdo-draw ng future,” the host-actress enthused.
After the “E-Live” episode, both Mariel and Robin went to a party tendered by their fans. Perhaps intent on making the most out of their little bonding session with their favorite pair, the fans requested, “Kiss! Kiss!”
Robin, who gladly obliged, stood from his seat and gave Mariel a kiss---supposedly on the lips---but we’ll never know, as his fedora hat concealed both their faces. After the kiss that lasted a few seconds and long squeals from their avid supporters, Mariel gestured to them, “sa forehead.”

'Fan' assaults Sarah Geronimo’s dad inside ABS-CBN
A man posing as a fan of Sarah Geronimo pointed a gun at the singer's father, Delfin Geronimo, at the Basement 1 Parking Area inside the ABS-CBN building in the afternoon of Aug. 8.
According to Geronimo, an ABS-CBN security guard contacted him, saying the suspect, a Paulino Mercado, had a gift for him [Delfin] to claim. Upon arriving at the basement, Mercado told Geronimo that in order to collect the gift, he had to sign papers inside a van that was parked in a dimly lit area of the basement.
Once near the open van, Geronimo said Mercado forcibly pushed him inside and poked a stun gun at him. Geronimo fought off Mercado and screamed for help to which an ABS-CBN security group promptly responded. Geronimo and Mercado were brought to Station 10 QCPD for investigations.
Initial findings show that the van had two plate number: WTA 741 and the original WPC 437. The suspect’s motive for attacking Geronimo’s dad is still unknown.

Miriam Quiambao moves on after divorce
She may have had great luck in beauty pageants, having been crowned the First Runner-up (to Miss Botswana) at the 1999 Miss Universe pageant in Trinidad-Tobago, but Miriam Quiambao isn’t quite that lucky in love—at least not with her first marriage.
Quiambao met Claudio Rondinelli in October 2002. He proposed marriage in September of 2003, and they wed on December 23, 2003 in Hong Kong, and in a sunset ceremony in Boracay on January 9, 2004.
In January this year, Miriam was finally granted a divorce, but not before having undergone severe depression.
During an interview on “Paparazzi” on Aug. 8, Quiambao refuted money issues as the cause of the split. “When we were married and we were happy, of course he spoiled me. Diyos ko, ang pasalubong nga niyan, Hermes scarf. Ganun siya ka-generous, ganyan siya ka-galante sa akin. He gave me a really good life. At saka hindi totoo na hindi siya mayaman, no… meron naman siyang Aston Martin sa Italy. He’s a jetsetter,” she said.
But then she points out, “Pero hindi ko naman din siya pinakasalan dahil sa yaman niya. Pinakasalan ko siya dahil in love talaga kami.”
But she said the marriage started to crumble when she had fallen into depression. She said, “Malungkot ako, I was away from family and friends... wala akong trabaho. So nahirapan talaga ako mag-adjust to married life. Sanay akong career woman, tapos naging housewife [ako]. Happy naman ako to serve him pero nalungkot ako kasi wala akong kakilala, lalo na sa Italy. He was always traveling.”
But the last straw was the fact that neither of them knew how to address the problem. “When we were really having a tough time, hindi talaga namin alam kung pano pag-usapan ‘yung mga problema. And yung intimacy namin, it’s not as if ‘yung connection talaga super deep and emotional. Kasi nung nagde-date kami, super saya nung experience namin… puro good time. Pero when the bad times came, hindi namin alam kung pano malampasan ‘yon.”
Claiming that while the problem was not really compounded by him not wanting children (“Ginusto rin naman niya magka-anak, kaya lang we just were not okay,” she said) nor physical abuse (“Hindi naman, sinaktan niya ako emotionally. May konting verbal abuse,” she admitted), her revelations about their intimacy issues clearly resonated with the female hosts of the show.
“Nung honeymoon pa lang namin, nagkakaroon na kami ng problems. In terms of intimacy,” she revealed.
In tears, she shared, “Basta nung honeymoon namin, hindi kami nag-consummate. And it stretched on for six months. I felt very neglected. Dumating sa realization ko ‘yung, ‘Oh my God, iniwan ko ‘yung career ko, lahat ng mga mahal ko sa buhay tapos ganito.’ ‘We didn’t know how to go through it, tahimik lang kami, hindi namin pinag-uusapan.
"I think it was because at the time when we got married, hindi talaga siya handa. And napilitan lang siya kasi he didn’t wanna let me go. Pinakasalan niya ako because he wanted me to be happy.”
Lamenting an absence of emotional connection, she also stated, “At a time when I was very depressed, I needed friends, in-introduce naman niya ako. Pero when I needed him, he wasn’t there for me emotionally. I needed to see a psychologist because I was wondering what was happening with me. And then I called him because the doctor said we should go through marital counseling. Actually ayaw niya… I really had to beg on the phone to please come and meet with the doctor with me. So kung hindi ako nag beg sa kanya, hindi pa siya pumunta.”
She was so unhappy that, in an interview with a broadsheet last May, she admitted contemplating suicide and that a third party caused the break-up. Both issues were not raised during the “Paparazzi” interview though.
But now that the divorce is final, Quiambao said she and Rondinelli have become friends. “Kasi ‘yun naman talaga ang goal ko, na after all this is over, at the very least we should be friends. So in February when I went to visit, we had lunch and we were okay.”
She said she even returned the Rolex watch that he had lent her. Jokingly, Gutierrez said she should not have done so. “Eh hindi naman talaga niya binibigay eh. So alangan naman i-keep ko yung hindi niya binibigay. So sinauli ko sa kanya. Parang pinaniniwalaan ko na lang na, ay nako bibigyan din ako ng trabaho ni God para maka-afford din ako ng Rolex,” Quiambao answered.
In another broadsheet write-up in January 2010, Quiambao was said to have admitted to a women’s health magazine that she was dating someone. Though the article did not mention any names, the piece heralded that Quiambao was “satisfied” about the divorce and that “annulment proceedings in the country [were] underway.”
Meanwhile, Rondinelli seemed to have moved on as well. “At the time we had lunch, meron na siyang dine-date,” Quiambao admitted. When asked if it affected her, she replied, “Hindi na, happy ako for him. And at least naman, ganito civil kami. Hindi kami ganon ka-friends na nagtatawagan every now and then, wala nang ganon. And there’s really no reason to talk to each other anymore.”
“The greatest lesson is to honor myself, my preferences and love myself first before I go into a relationship and love someone else,” she said of her experience.
When Gutierrez pointed out that her ex-husband didn’t seem to be the right man for her, Quiambao concurred. Gutierrez also kidded her about her seeming preference for men who lived in Hong Kong; however, it was unclear if the host meant the same guy that Quiambao was said to be dating in January.
However, to her joke, the beauty queen responded, “Oo nga, kasi taga-dun siya eh. He’s a really good man. Super sweet guy. And if he were living here or if I were living in Hong Kong, probably he could be a really good candidate. It’s just that he has a stable job there; he has no plans of moving here.”
Admitting to being traumatized about packing up and going to live in another country for love, Quiambao added, “Bukod doon, I have a realty business here, plus I’m trying to establish myself in showbiz once again.”
Gutierrez then pointed out that it would probably take more than just love to make Quiambao move to Hong Kong again with someone called “Vince.” To this Quiambao replied, “Nagawa ko na kasi ‘yun Rufa, eh. Parang mas gusto ko ‘yung guy naman ang taga-rito or lilipat dito for me. Naka-focus na lang ako sa trabaho.”
But through it all, Quiambao said she remains hopeful and would love to get married again. “Of course, wala pa akong mga anak. Gusto ko rin magka-anak at siyempre gusto ko magawa ‘yun within a marriage na happy ako…”

Diether Ocampo’s ex reveals her side of the story
As with showbiz hook-ups and break-ups, most of the story could be gleaned from an episode of an afternoon weekend talk show, which was what happened with Diether Ocampo and erstwhile girlfriend of two years, Rima Ostwani. A visibly affected Ostwani appeared on “The Buzz” on Aug. 8 where she shared her feelings about the break-up.
Those who knew the couple were “shocked” when on Aug. 4, Diether made these statements on “Showbiz News Ngayon” regarding his relationship with Ostwani:
“Merong mga pagkakataon na kailangan balansehen mo ‘yung mga bagay-bagay. Kailangan mo lang maging fair sa lahat ng taong naging involved sa buhay mo whether it’s personal or sa professional career. So at this point, naging ano ako eh, I have to sacrifice something, ‘di ba? Hindi ko naman sinabi na pang-matagalan eh. Gusto kong bigyan ng prioridad ‘yung mga importante at this point sa akin. Na mga gagawin ko na hakbang… na ayaw mo siyempre makasakit ng ibang tao.”
Vague as this may be, Ocampo insisted the decision to split was “mutual” and that, “Nagkaintindihan kami diyan. Wala namang bagay na hindi kami napagkasunduan.”
Speaking with Boy Abunda on “The Buzz,” Ostwani —a print ad model whose father is Sirian and mother is a Spanish-German with Filipino blood, and who grew up in Lebanon but went to high school and college here in the Philippines— shared that Ocampo first saw her at an event.
He joked that their relationship was “love at first feet,” and she related that Ocampo “was texting so he was looking down. And he told me that I passed by and so he saw my feet. That was the first thing he noticed.”
But to Abunda’s question as to whether it was also “love at first sight,” she admitted, “There’s this stigma to actors eh…” To this, Abunda asked if it had something to do with many showbiz guys being “babaero.”
“’Yun ‘yun… ‘di ba, babaero. So sabi ko, parang hindi yata ako bagay diyan. Or parang that’s not for me, ayaw ko namang ma-involve diyan or something like that. But when I met him, one of the first things he told me was that, ‘I have a foundation. I love children.’ And he gave me his business card for Kids Foundation. I was like, I felt so guilty to have judged him.”
Love for kids aside, Ostwani revealed how Ocampo won her over. “Oh my God , Tito Boy, we were seeing each other every single day. He was picking me up from work every single day, believe it or not.”
Saying they had a very good connection, Ocampo nevertheless had a warning for her about show business. “Sabi niya sa akin it’s quite demanding when it comes to time. So he told me when he has project, he will be very busy and I have to be prepared.”
Well, she might have been prepared but it turned out it was Ocampo that needed the time off. Admitting to the break-up, Ostwani had also been very forthcoming about her very private emotions. “Actually, sobrang masakit talaga ito para sa akin. Sabi niya nahihirapan daw siyang balansehen ‘yung work niya tsaka ‘yung relationship namin. Nalungkot talaga ako kasi dati naman, naba-balance naman niya eh.”
She added, “Tina-try ko talaga i-understand… ilagay ‘yung sarili ko sa sitwasyon niya, kung gano siya ka-busy. Kung gano kahirap din ang trabaho niya, kung gano kahirap din siguro balansehin lahat. Mahirap talaga kasi masakit eh… parang is that enough reason to throw away what we had?”
She said sometimes there would be fights, and at times it would be because of her “maliliit na tampo kung sobrang busy siya, or kung let’s say walang time. Siyempre hinahanap-hanap mo rin siya.”
Yet Ostwani nevertheless revealed that that they had spoken about marriage at some point.
“It wasn’t something that was in the near future when we’d speak about it, but it was always where we wanted to go,” she stated. During the interview, however, Ostwani flat out said she felt that, “Hindi talaga ako priority."
“There were a couple of very painful incidents that he put me through, which I felt were unnecessary. And that’s when I realized, ‘Wow, kung kaya niyang gawin ‘yan, talagang parang he doesn’t even give our relationship importance.’ I felt very much taken for granted,” she revealed.
However, she refuted rumors about a third party. “Wala. Hindi po totoo ‘yon. Para sa akin, mahal ko lang talaga siya and I just wanted our relationship to work, of course.”
When Abunda asked if she still loved Ocampo, Ostwani simply bowed her head in tears. He then asked if she cried about it, and, again, she held nothing off by admitting, “Sobra… sobra, sobra… I was praying for enlightenment. And He gave me signs, and those signs gave me the strength to move forward.”
For Ostwani, her strength through this ordeal had come from people whom, she said, cared about her. “You try to stay positive eh, you try to pull yourself up because you don’t wanna stay down there. I know I lost an important part of me, but I still have my life…”
But her message to Ocampo had been heartfelt. “There is nothing I wanna tell Diether except thank you. Thank you for showing me love. I didn’t know I had this much love to give. Thank you for the wonderful experiences, we had great times. He was a great inspiration. And he will always have a mark in my life.”
