ABS-CBN and GMA news anchors receive awards from COMGUILD Center for Journalism

The COMGUILD Center for Journalism bestowed awards on some of the most prominent news anchors and reporters in the country during its 5th "Annual Conference of Journalism and Mass Communication Students in the Philippines." The conference, with its theme this year of “Pursuit of Mass Media Towards Responsible Broadcast Journalism,” was held on August 1 at the AFP Theater in Quezon City.

Among the awardees were ABS-CBN’s Ted Failon for Outstanding Male News Presenter, Karen Davila for Outstanding Female News Presenter, Anthony Taberna for Best Male Field Reporter and Ina Reformina for Best Female Reporter.

The highlight of the conference was the first ever Hall of Fame award which was given to GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and “24 Oras,” Mel Tiangco. Proudly accepting such an accolade from a group composed of deans and chairmen of various Mass Communications departments of various colleges and universities—38 of whom served as judges—Tiangco told “24 Oras” that, “I’m really, really honored by this award. For as long as our people need help, there’s much to do. Hindi mauubos ang dapat gawin ng isang katulad ko.”

According to its website, Communication Guild Consultancy (COMGUILD) was established on August 2001, with an initial goal to provide speech and journalism courses to students. It evolved into COMGUILD Center for Journalism, Speech and Style, with the company currently being headed by businesswoman and international print ad model Jennifer Cruz a.k.a Ina Alegre.

The site further states: “COMGUILD CENTER FOR JOURNALISM is also an award-giving body that recognizes the exemplary work of local broadcasters and news presenters deliberated by a reputable Board of Judges comprised of highly regarded educators, heads and the deans of different colleges and universities in the country.”

Among its major activities is the annual conference. The themes of the four previous conferences had been “Setting the Watchdogs Free in Futures Journalist,” “Media Practice: Current Issues, Future Challenges,” “Journalism: Past, Present and Future Challenges” and “Media Ethics and Responsibilities in the Society,” respectively.
